The Profit is a CNBC American reality TV show featuring business leader and philanthropist, Marcus Lemonis. Premiering in July 2013, the show follows Lemonis as he seeks to help small businesses succeed. There comes a moment in every episode when Lemonis presents the business owners with an offer of investment in exchange for partial ownership, financial control, or some variation thereof.

We appeared on episode 12 of Season 3, which aired on November 17, 2015. We’re happy to say that we made a Deal with Marcus.

We first heard of The Profit when Damion was on vacation at Disneyland with his wife and child. Relaxing in front of the television in their hotel room, Damion became immediately intrigued by Marcus, and what the show could offer Kensington Gazebos. They watched the rest of the episodes when they returned home.

We knew that we had a solid product on our hands, and that we were secure financially. Our handcrafted cedar gazebos were unique—there was no doubt in our minds. Yet we had limited space and equipment, and we felt that we could benefit from Marcus’ vision. We no longer wanted to be a hidden gem at a trade show that a customer might come across if we were lucky.

Unsure whether we would even qualify for consideration, we nevertheless applied as soon as Damion returned from vacation. We received a response within days. Within a few weeks, we had a casting call and a meeting with the producer during the installation of one of our cedar gazebos.

A bit nervous and excited, we had been working a trade show for 4 weeks when Marcus arrived to introduce himself and see our work for the first time. He was blown away by the craftsmanship and attention to detail. He had never seen anything like it.

We learned a lot about ourselves and our business on The Profit. Marcus encouraged us to invest in ourselves so that we grow personally and professionally. That meant new equipment and a new commercial space. We streamlined our internal processes and organized our workflow to reduce waste and achieve a highly efficient rate of production.

We also learned not to worry so much, and to take the time to communicate with each other. Happiness produces quality work, and looking after each other allows us to address any challenges that arise as a team.

We never wanted to change the product. Our passion for quality is what got us here in the first place. But what we needed was guidance. We needed a partner who loved our product and wanted to push us nationwide. The Profit came at the right time for Kensington gazebos, and our partnership with Marcus has been and continues to be invaluable.
